According to Three mobile operator, customer information of over 130,000 subscribers has been compromised in a cyber security breach. All affected customers were being informed and assured that no financial information had been compromised.
Investigation of a cyber attack resulted in arrest of 3 men over the alleged fraudulent use of the Three’s phone upgrade system in an attempt to steal handsets. The mobile operator became aware of suspicious activity on the system used to upgrade existing customers to new devices, and finally was able to confirm that 8 customers had been unlawfully upgraded by fraudsters who intended to intercept and sell on the devices. It was found that those fraudsters also managed to obtain customer information from 133,827 accounts, but the company didn’t store bank details, passwords, pin numbers, payment information or credit/debit card information on that upgrade system, so those remained secure. Three believes that the fraudsters’ primary purpose was to acquire new handsets rather than steal customer data.
The mobile operator placed additional security measures on customer accounts as a precaution, while cooperating with police in the investigation of the breach. At the same time, Three had been criticized by some customers online for a “muted response to the breach”. In the meantime, security experts continue to urge major companies with large amounts of customer data to go further to protect consumers’ sensitive data. It must be said that the Three breach was the latest in a range of cyber attacks and data breaches, including those on such tech giants as TalkTalk and Yahoo.
