Firefox Offers Really Private Browsing

Mozilla’s Firefox introduced Firefox Focus – a new browser that offers iPhone users private web surfing. This was an unexpected move from the company that has often struggled against the forces of inertia. Instead of making attempts to beat the might of Apple’s ability to dictate the default browser on iOS, Mozilla created the category of “second browser”, and owned that.

Firefox Focus is as simple as a browser can be. It boots straight in to a search bar, where the default and only search engine is Yahoo (that can’t be changed). Apparently, this is due to the $375m per year that Yahoo pays Firefox to be the default search engine. At the same time, the browser also strips out everything that could track user’s browsing: cookies, ad trackers, analytics trackers, social trackers, etc. The process is permanently accompanied by a one-click Erase button, which allows to clear all the data from any given session.

Firefox Focus is positioned by Mozilla as a browser “for the times when you don’t want to leave a record on your phone”. In addition, it also operates as a content blocker for Safari itself, enabling you to block tracking services (and by extension, many adverts) in the main browser.

In fact, a similar experience can be offered by other tools available on iPhones right now, including Safari’s private browsing mode, when combined with a content blocker. It seems that Mozilla just hopes to convince users that it’s easier to click a separate app icon when they need really private browsing.

In the meantime, Firefox continues to be a popular browser on the desktop, more than three times more popular than Internet Explorer, according to the latest researches. The problem is that the rise of mobile has led to the Firefox’s overall importance shrinking, while Chrome’s user share – both on desktop and mobile – reached almost 75% of the total market and dwarfed the 15% of browsers who use Firefox.

The industry experts call it a huge decline for Firefox, the open-source browser originating from Netscape – the app hit its highest share of users 7 years ago, when 47.9% of web surfers had it installed, while Google Chrome was on only 6.5% of devices. Perhaps, Mozilla is trying to win back at least iOS users for now and might introduce something innovative for desktops, too.

No avatarI prefer firefox but I admit there are issues with it. The main ones are updates are not properly tested so weird things sometimes happen, the next is that some sites with firefox it does not work and you need something else, toolbars keep reseting and I cannot figure our why and lastly if something goes wrong with firefox they tell you to reset all you have done and if you do that you lose all your work and often the problem remain.

Having said that its my favorite browser.

No avatarFirefox is the great browser which is light and works on different speeds of internet. The problem they real have is updates which ignore the add ons which will seem to be out of date.The Mozillians needs to work hardly to improve this browser.

No avatarWhy has Firefox lost so much market share over the last 7 years? It's obviously Obama's fault. You think it's just a coincidence that the decline began right after he took office? Yeah, right. Obama also threatened to do a drone strike on Kevin Durant's mom if he didn't join the Warriors. Besides, only libtards use that commie browser. OOh, I hate them liberals, with their Amy Goodman and their Volvos, drivin' around tellin us what to do all the time... We showed them a thing or two!

I believe your post is against site policy, but for the time being, I drive a (superfast)volvo and I tell no one what to do, just what not to do like: "don't break suddenly when I am tailing you"
Oh and I am a commie too because I love the Mozilla browser, especially with the TOR package.
From your post I distillate that you are a Trump lover, well I will only say one thing to that, see my nickname, it is exactly what Us is becoming.

On topic, Firefox rules, did not find a safari tor plugin yet...(ok did not search for it either ;P )

zacsawyer avatar@IDIOCRACY I think he's being sarcastic.

Yahoo! is a big NSA "helper", so Firefox = privacy. I use Firefox but half the time stuff won't work even in safe-mode and I end up using Chrome anyway. Google controls my phone of course but I barely use it. I'm really starting not to care what Google's got on me, their contempt for the unwashed masses is so obvious that probably nothing surprises them anymore. I like the idea of Firefox but they still have to make money, so it'll never truly be "free" or private.

chdr1 avatarfire fox is good i use it for non torrent downloads that have a large file because you can restart the download there is no way to do that with chrome which is very stupid and frustrating when you get to 80% downloaded and it stops and you have to start again from the beginning and delete the data in the first try huge waste of bandwidth and time and effort but what would chrome care they don't pay your isp bills or have a limited bandwidth contract with their isp ... having said that i still use chrome for day to day browsing

In your address bar type "about:memory" and do a cycle/garbage collection. Should do the trick.

hillbillies avatari prefer opera browser ive had nothing but trouble with pop ups from firefox always get one from some one claiming to be from microsoft and telling me to ring some dopey no you cant do anything when it pops up so i switched to opera and have not had that problem again since

posted by (2016-11-23 02:27:29)
Crunkcoco avatarI also use Opera and have not had any issues with errors, or pages not loading like I sometimes do with FF or Chrome. I remember an HP support specialist telling me that if I wanted to avoid "typical" browser errors to use Microsoft Edge (thanks, but NO thanks).

@Patient_0..appreciate the tip, it helped.

No avatarUsing FF since the past 10 years or so. Works great. Eats up memory but less than chrome, according to what I have noticed.

@Patient_0 @Crunkcoco
Using FF version 50.0 On the about:memory page I clicked on Cycle/Garbage collection but not a considerable impact. Any tips?

No avatarlol Selsley. @7 zacsawyer, don't need to worry about Yahoo anymore, they are going bye bye. There messenger has a Facebook(CIA book) look to it already and has less privacy(in prep for Verizon). It's no better than a Google product now.

shivababa avatarreargunner, I tend to use it with Chrome too. Android version has no updates, but PC version gets updates.

MadmanMac avatarI gota say that reading this has been informative and Ill throw in my little bit also, I have a good few different browsers installed all mostly mentioned in the previous posts. IE explorer does the job for most reasonably, chrome I seem to have nothing but trouble with on PC, Safari and Opera both accomplish the job with no particular excellence in any field at all, Firefox I liked a lot and have used for a very long time until I found its cousin browser, SeaMonkey, which, after using now as main browser for more than a year and using it hard, multiple tabs open on various different sites open all the time. It has great addons and great support and ease of both the menu system and settings, I strongly suggest everyone in the world change to that browser as their main

Anyhow, said my bit on the subject and gave SeaMonkey a glowing revue which I promise you is heartfelt.

And #21... LOL, so so true breathless19, so so true

ReservoirDogs avatarStrange guys, that you got problems with FireFox, i never had a problem with it and i always have at least 50 tabs open, it's very stable and fast (i use FF for Mac though).

No avatari prefer firefox, it does streaming well. the bad side of it is the takes up memory and long load time.

No avatarI used to use Firefox until something better (Chrome) came along. Firefox is the single most poorly written browser of the big four (IE/Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Opera)--yes, even worse than IE/Edge. I believe most of the hangers on that still use it do so out of misguided loyalty, baseless pride, habit/laziness, stoicism, or straight up masochism--you can tell which by how they respond to statements like this one.
